SetMatcher
What SetMatcher does

Losing the first match does not have to end somebody’s day.

In a plain knockout, half the players go home after one match. SetMatcher also offers draws that keep people playing: a plate for first-round losers, a feed-in consolation, a compass draw, and a play-out where nobody is knocked out at all.

How it works

Seeds are spread so the strongest players meet as late as possible: the top seed plays the lowest, the second seed the second lowest, and so on. Byes go to the top seeds. In a plate, feed-in or compass draw, a player who loses moves to the matching place in the next bracket, so every bracket stays fair from top to bottom.

Some draw formats need a certain number of players. A compass draw works with exactly 16, 32 or 64 entries. A plate needs enough first-round losers to fill it. And once groups have been turned into a knockout, a group result can no longer be changed.

Good to know

Once a later match is played, earlier results stay put.

If you change who won a match, SetMatcher first checks what that result already led to. If a later match already has a score, the change is not allowed and you are told why, so nobody’s semi-final changes behind their back. If nothing later has been played, the old result is undone along the same path and the new one takes its place, and the courts and times you planned stay as they were.

Where you find it
  • Bracket
  • Board
  • Desk
  • Print sheets
You see the same draw in the tournament, at the desk, on the printed sheet and on the public page of a published event. On a big screen it shows every round side by side, and on a phone it shows one round at a time, with each match saying where its players came from. You can also move through it with the arrow keys.
